This talk will provide an integrated overview of how the disparate parts of NASA’s Artemis program fit together in a design reference construction –a vision for a nuclear-enabled water-based Earth/Moon/Mars economy. This includes the use of space nuclear power and propulsion for transportation on trade routes between the systems, along with fission power at the Moon to gather, crack, and electromagnetically propel hydrogen and water resources from the lunar surface to waiting depots in cislunarspace. This ties together all of NASA (and international partners) programs for Orion, SLS, Gateway, robotic and human landers, spacesuits, rovers, and relocatable surface habitation; development programs like DRACO, JETSON, FSP, LVSAT, and power beaming; and visionary “horizon” concepts like Mars Base Camp, the Mars Ascent/Descent Vehicle (MADV), and NASA’s Mars science efforts including comms, remote sensing, and Mars Sample Return (MSR) … in a way that clearly shows how all this works together and that “the math works”.
Rob Chambers is the Director of Strategy for Lockheed Martin’s Human and Scientific Space Exploration area. In this role, he is focused on Lockheed Martin’s blueprint for extending humanity’s knowledge of our planet, our solar system, and the universe at large. Rob has been with Lockheed Martin since 1993 and has worked on a variety of spaceflight programs including Earth remote sensing satellites, the Space Shuttle, Orion, human lunar landers, nuclear power and propulsion, and deep space habitation.
Rob has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Aeronautical and AstronauticalEngineering from Purdue University. Throughout his career, Rob has led the development of guidance and controls subsystems, avionics, and flight software.
