On May 21, 2025, the Society of Women Engineers Rocky Mountain Section (SWE RMS) hosted the annual Girls Exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (GESTEM) event at Denver’s Auraria Campus. This year’s event welcomed over 1,000 seventh-grade girls from more than 40 schools across the region, providing them with the opportunity to explore STEM through hands-on workshops and real-world applications.
Among the 30+ workshops offered, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Rocky Mountain Section led the session titled “Good Vibrations.” In this engaging, acoustics-based activity, students explored the physics of sound by learning how vibrations create waves and how those waves translate into the sounds we hear every day. Through interactive demos and experiments, students investigated core concepts such as frequency, amplitude, and resonance, while also discovering how these principles are applied in aerospace, satellite technology, and communication systems. Students ended the workshop by building their own C-chord wind chime to take home!
The success of the “Good Vibrations” workshop would not have been possible without the dedicated AIAA volunteers who brought energy, expertise, and enthusiasm to each session. Their efforts not only made the activity engaging and educational but also provided invaluable mentorship and representation for young students exploring STEM. Thanks to AIAA and other participating organizations, GESTEM continues to offer these opportunities completely free of charge, helping to ensure that every student can see themselves in a future STEM career.
As part of its mission, AIAA remains committed to outreach initiatives like GESTEM, helping ignite a passion for science and engineering in the next generation—one vibration at a time.
