The UCCS American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) student chapter recently helped launch an unforgettable week of aerospace adventure for more than 150 high school students from across the country. These bright young minds came to campus as part of the prestigious Aviation Academy, a national STEM program led by Envision by WorldStrides—and they left inspired, ignited, and maybe even a little rocket-fueled.
Mission Day 1: An Astronaut Among Us
On Friday, July 18, the student chapter proudly welcomed Dr. Leroy Chiao, former NASA astronaut and veteran of four space missions, for an evening of awe and inspiration. Over 100 guests—including students, faculty, parents, and even some curious kids—filled the room to hear Dr. Chiao recount his remarkable journey to space.
From his childhood dream sparked by Apollo 11 to the rigors of astronaut training, Dr. Chiao wove a story rich in perseverance, science, and human wonder. He shared jaw-dropping photos from orbit—stunning shots of Earth’s thin blue atmosphere, Central Park, and the Great Pyramid of Egypt—all taken from the International Space Station.
Blending humor, insight, and heartfelt encouragement, Dr. Chiao’s talk left a deep impression—especially on the younger students, many of whom left with stars in their eyes.

Mission Day 2: Rocket Science Ignites the Crowd
The next evening, Saturday, July 19, things really took off—literally.
Led by Dr. Lynnane George from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, along with UCCS Aerospace Engineering students Jared Berty, Jaxon Fellers, and Nathaniel Griner, attendees were treated to a high-octane, hands-on keynote about rocket science that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Students launched alka-seltzer rockets, watched a foamy hydrogen peroxide reaction known as "elephant toothpaste," and gasped at a thunderous hydrogen-fueled rocket demo. Explosive chemistry and physics met storytelling and mentorship as Dr. George shared her experience working on launch vehicles in the U.S. Air Force, while student presenters introduced UCCS research projects and the growing Rocketry Club.
Audience members also battled for bragging rights in aerospace trivia, making the session both interactive and educational.
Mission Debrief: Final Q&A with an Astronaut and a Dancing Robot
On Thursday, July 24, students were treated to a bonus session with both Dr. Chiao and Dr. George, where they could ask questions, reflect on what they’d learned, and get a few final surprises.
Among the highlights? Dr. George’s robotic creation, “Tony the Dancing Robot,” brought smiles and sparked curiosity—while Dr. Chiao’s additional stories and insights reminded students that space is not as far away as it seems.
Liftoff Achieved
From inspiring astronaut stories to explosive demos and dancing robots, this year’s collaboration between UCCS and the Aviation Academy delivered a full-throttle STEM experience. Events like this not only showcase what UCCS has to offer but also help shape the next generation of engineers, scientists, and explorers.
“It was an amazing opportunity to share what we’re doing at UCCS with a national audience of future STEM leaders,” said Dr. George.
