About The Event
During the first day (Thu 9/12) of AIAA Rocky Mountain Section's 2024 Annual Technical Symposium (ATS), University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is offering FREE one (1) hour tours of their Engineering Laboratories.
Two (2) time slots for the tours are available: 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm and 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
Please meet at the University Center Building in front of Berger Hall on the UCCS campus.
Stop 1:   Space Systems Lab (10 minutes) Joshua Pappas
Students will present their hands-on projects they work on in the lab.
Cubesat Demo - Josh
In this portion of the tour, you will be introduced to the small satellites, or cubesats, that are used in the Aerospace Engineering program at UCCS to help freshmen gain an appreciation for the intricacies of handling hardware that will fly in space.
Vibration table - Josh
UCCS recently acquired a vibration testbed to ensure satellites we launch on high altitude balloons, sounding rockets, and in space will be able to survive the harsh environments on the way there.
Stop 2:   Wind tunnel and Fluids Lab (10 minutes)  - Dr. Ben Wilcox
Stop 3:   Prototyping Machine shop on the hill (10 minutes) - Mr. Tucker Walsh
High Altitude Race Engineering (HARE) - Garrett Costa or Tai Benson
Our team simulates real-world engineering deliverables in a scored competition. We design & build a new vehicle each year to meet competition requirements. Using CAD design, our on-campus machine shop, creating an entrepreneurial environment, and pushing the limits of our developing curriculum to score well on paper and on track against our competitors.
Stop 4: Â Â UCCS Machine shop and Design/Build/Fly Club (DBF) (10 Minutes)Â - Jackson
UCCS Design, Build, Fly was founded in 2022Â by a few dedicated UCCS Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering students. The club builds RC electric model airplanes to compete in AIAA's Design, Build, Fly competition.
Stop 5: Astrophotography Club (10 minutes) - 3rd floor balcony - Tyler Trylon and Dale Mueller
The most recent club formed at UCCS will be discussing  how to take quality images of celestial objects, and process them for viewing or data-analysis purposes.
