About The Event

Ushering in a new generation of space weather observing satellites, the Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) will facilitate early warnings for destructive space weather events. While orbiting the Sun at about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth at L1, SWFO-L1 will collect solar wind data and coronal imagery to monitor and forecast impacts from solar storm activity. SWFO-L1 will host several instruments to measure and assess space weather, including detecting coronal mass ejection events.

Chief engineer Deepti Sharma will give an overview of the mission and the spacecraft Ball is building to provide the nation with remotely sensed and in situ observations to assess the space weather environment and provide early warning of damaging space weather events to protect critical national infrastructure like the electric grid and space-based assets.

Deepti Sharma is a Systems Engineer at Ball Aerospace and is the Chief Engineer on the SWFO-L1 Space Vehicle. Previously, Ms. Sharma served as Program Manager and Lead Engineer for TROPICS at Blue Canyon Technologies. She was the Spacecraft Lead Engineer for launch and commissioning on the JPSS-1 and Soumi-NPP programs. She has over 17 years experience in spacecraft design and test, fault management, and mission operations across multiple LEO and deep space missions. Deepti holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan.
