The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University (CSU) is looking to hire a tenure-track/tenured faculty position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in Aerospace Systems Design and/or Controls.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to join CSU’s expanding aerospace program while being based in Colorado, the nation’s second-largest aerospace economy. The state is home to major industry leaders such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, BAE, Sierra Space, Ursa Major, Maxar, and Boom Technology, as well as cutting-edge startups and strong federal and defense partnerships.

Position Highlights:
Focus Areas (broad and interrelated):
Aircraft and spacecraft design (including next-gen and hypersonic systems, eVTOL/AAM).
Aerospace systems design (MDO, reduced-order modeling, digital twins, system-of-systems).
Autonomous systems (GNC, resilient controls, AI-driven decision-making, multi-agent systems).
Space systems architecture, logistics, and operations (constellations, mission networks, space domain awareness).
Responsibilities:
Develop a high-impact, externally funded research program.
Teach and mentor undergraduate through PhD students.
Engage in service to the department, profession, and university.
Support: Competitive start-up package ($500K–$600K), ~500 sq ft lab/office space at CSU’s Powerhouse Energy Campus, and access to state-of-the-art facilities.
Appointment: 9-month, full-time, tenure-track (Assistant/Associate Professor)
Qualifications:
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
Demonstrated scholarship and ability to teach aerospace and mechanical engineering courses.
(Associate level) Record of external funding, publications, and graduate student advising.
